Resident Fellow Member Physicians are a vital part of MPS
Michigan’s ten residency programs are each represented on the MPS Council. In addition to the rigors of their training, Residents make time to advocate for their patients and their profession.
Post-graduate education in psychiatry begins after a physician completes his or her medical training and has earned either an MD (Medical Doctor) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree. It consists of four years of residency training of which at least 36 months are in psychiatry. Residency programs provide experiences in general medical care (at least four months in internal medicine, family medicine and/or pediatrics) and neurology (at least two months), in addition to time in psychiatry. Although the patterns of rotations differ from one program to another, they all share a focus on the clinical care of patients with both psychiatric and general medical illnesses. All psychiatric residencies include training in a variety of psychotherapies.
The first post graduate year usually consists of four months of internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, or some combination thereof, plus two months of neurology. The remaining six months vary from program to program and may consist of time on psychiatry services (such as Emergency Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, etc.) or additional experience in primary care.
These years include rotations on an inpatient service (6-16 months), with full and partial hospitalization, emergency department and/or walk-in or crisis clinic coverage, and ambulatory services. These experiences are complemented by didactic and participatory seminars, as well as case supervision. Introductory experiences in public health/community psychiatry, child psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and consultation/liaison psychiatry are also usually included in PG-2 and 3.
The final year of psychiatry residency training (PG-4) generally offers opportunities for electives. Residents may choose to focus on special clinical and/or research experiences within the field of psychiatry.
Following Psychiatric Residency, some psychiatrists elect to complete a fellowship for a one-year period, in a subspecialty area, such as Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (two-year program), Forensic Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, or Psychosomatic Medicine.
